CHILDBIRTH is daunting enough for most people, but imagine giving birth in the driveway of your family home by yourself.
Mount Isa woman Alaina Ardney gave birth to a healthy baby boy in the early hours of yesterday morning.
Her partner Trevor Duncan had taken her out to the family car to drive her to the hospital, but Ms Ardney was unable to get herself in the car.
"I'm having it now" was all she was able to tell her partner.
Mr Duncan ran back into the house to call an ambulance, but within minutes heard his partner yell out "It's here".
When he ran outside he saw Ms Ardney cradling his newborn son in her arms.
She had delivered the baby on to soft grass next to the driveway with no assistance.
But she said she wasn't daunted when she realised she would have to give birth by herself.
"It happened that quickly I didn't really get the chance to panic. I was pretty calm until he came out, then I was like 'Oh my God, I just had a baby in my driveway'," she said. "I picked him up and held him and just tried to make sure he was warm. Once I heard him cry I knew he was okay."
Ms Ardney's labour was done and dusted in just over an hour.
Mr Duncan said while he was disappointed to miss the birth of his son, it probably made the process a bit easier.
"It's probably a good thing I wasn't there because I wouldn't have known what to do. I still can't believe she delivered it all by herself," he said.
The couple called their healthy son Trey Evans. His middle name came from the street in which he was born. He was the third child for the couple.?
