Baby in stable condition after fall from B.C. balcony

MISSION, B.C. — RCMP here say a baby who plunged from a third-floor balcony on Wednesday fell by accident.

The 13-month-old girl remains in stable condition at B.C. Children's Hospital after falling from the balcony while playing, police said Thursday.

The girl was rushed from the apartment to Mission Memorial Hospital with severe head trauma around 5:50 p.m. Wednesday. She was later transported to B.C. Children's Hospital in Vancouver, where her condition improved overnight.

Police will not be recommending charges against the parents.

It is not clear how the girl got over or through the balcony railing.

Sgt. Mariam Dickson said Thursday that the event should "serve as a reminder for parents to be extra vigilant in watching their children around balconies or vulnerable windows."

Mission is about 70 kilometres east of downtown Vancouver.
